Given the recalls of more than 7 million cribs in the last three years, concern is warranted. Read their article, Part I, to see what CPSC has to say regarding crib safety.
CPSC Recent Recalls and one Re-Announcement August 20th, 2009 | Safety, recalls | No Comments | There have been a number of baby product recalls in July and August that will be summarized here. Please look on the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) website for detailed information and for other recalled items, which you may be interested in and are not listed below. Please stop using all the products and contact the manufacturer on how to get a new product or credit. The contact information is linked below to each page of the CPSC. We have blogged about the Simplicity Cribs and Bassinets. Today, the CPSC re-announced their concern about these products given two recent infant deaths related to these products. Jumpin’ Jive Doorway Jumpers by Graco have been voluntarily recalled. A strip of fabric can become detached causing a choking hazard. We are not a fan of doorway jumpers to begin with – for safety reasons. Most alarmingly – The Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gates have been recalled as the hinges on the stair gate can break, causing a fall hazard. Always regularly check and maintain your own safety gates (no matter what brand) to make sure they are still adequately attached and have no loose pieces. Baby Hammocks by Nova Natural have been recalled due to fall and strangulation hazards. If you have a Baby Bjorn bouncer chair, take a good look at the model number with the ones being recalled. This recall involves the Baby Bjorn Babysitter Balance and Babysitter Balance Air bouncers. Small, sharp objects have been found to stick out of the padded area, posing a laceration hazard. Leapfrog recalls electronic plush toy “My Pal Scout” – an electronic plush toy dog due to a choking hazard. We’re sure you’ve seen these in a Babies R’ Us or Target. Evenflo recalls telephone toys due to choking hazard. We can’t even believe this is actually a pacifier – it looks like a bad toy for a doll. But 700 of these Gromex pacifiers have been recalled due to choking hazards from the small ventilation holes. Finally, and sadly (because companies should be better), nine companies have been penalized for selling toys and children’s products that violated the federal lead paint ban. About 400,000 Simplicity Drop Side Cribs are being recalled by retailers, reports the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Please stop using their products immediately. The CPSC is aware of an 8 month old child suffocating and dying from injuries sustained by this crib’s drop side feature. Apparently, the plastic hardware can involuntarily detach and cause the drop side to detach. When this occurs, a gap is created and the child can fall into the gap and suffocate. Given the enormous amounts of recalled Simplicity products – including bassinets, cribs and playards, we would not recommend a Simplicity product. In 2007, there were at least a million Simplicity cribs recalled. At least 13 children have died from using their cribs and bassinets. Further, the company that purchased Simplicity, SFCA, is no longer answering phone calls or emails – a sure red warning to all consumers. CPSC is urging consumers to look through their homes for Simplicity recalled products. Check out this PAGE of recalled products and check the products in your home.
Please be aware that the Simplicity (or SFCA) products are often branded by larger companies, like Fisher Price and Graco. If you remember our earlier blog entry about the Fisher Price Rainforest Playard – that was a Simplicity product. So check the CPSC website for model numbers and name of your product. 22,500 Bugaboo Bee Strollers Recalled June 3rd, 2009 | Safety, products, recalls | No Comments |
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled about 22,500 Bugaboo Bee strollers due to possible brake failure of one or two of their brakes. The Consumer Reports states “The strollers have the item code 580210 on a label on the back of the seat and item code 50100 on a label on the plastic support under the seat. The strollers were featured in blue, dark khaki, pink, red, yellow, and black. “bugaboo® bee” is printed on the left side of the seat. They were sold at juvenile product retailers nationwide and online from August 2007 through April 2009 for $530.” Please contact Bugaboo for more information about your particular stroller. About 96,000 Jardine Cribs have been recalled due to the wooden slats breaking and creating a gap that can strangle infants and toddlers. These cribs are sold at Babies R’ Us and Toys R’ Us. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received reports of slats breaking and minor injuries relating to same. The recall includes eight models of the wooden cribs. This is the third recall of the cribs and has been expanded from 2008 and early 2009 recalls. You can visit the Jardine Crib website or CPSC. The CPSC has recalled about three million fitness balls due to the possibility of the ball exploding due to over-inflation. The company called EB Brands has received 47 reports of balls unexpectedly bursting and injuries sustained due to the defects. They were sold nationwide, between May 2000 to February 2009. The warnings from EB Brands state that the balls should not be used during the pregnancy period. However, it is not unlikely that they would be purchased for use as a birthing ball. Therefore, Bliss Nine recommends that you cease using them altogether for fitness or pregnancy purposes. As for birthing ball quality, always choose a premium quality anti-burst birthing ball specifically made for birthing pregnancy purposes. Right about now, in this great weather, you are thinking about planning the upcoming summer vacation or trip to the beach and not what you and your family should do in case of a blackout or earthquake. But really, you should. It’s not a bad time to plan because not being prepared at all could be disastrous. Gather a sturdy container and set it aside as a go-to container for emergency products. Include water (three gallons per person), toilet paper, first aid kit, can opener, disposable cups and plates, non-perishable goods, food (include baby food and formula), clothing, diapers, flashlight, radio, ID cards, contact numbers and a large blanket. In an event of a fire or evacuation, you can grab the container and throw it into your trunk. When I was pregnant, I purchased a large plastic water container for camping that holds up to 7 gallons of water and has an attached spigot. Every month (or two, when I forget), I empty it onto my lawn and then refill it.
Be prepared, you will feel so much better. Large recall of high chairs lately April 5th, 2009 | Safety, products, recalls | No Comments | Evenflo expanded their December recall of Majestic high chairs to now include Evenflo Envision high chairs and all Evenflo Majestic high chairs, due to reports of parts of the high chairs falling out allowing the seat back to detach. The recalled high chairs were sold at Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Burlington Coat Factory and other stores. Please visit their website for details and immediately stop using the high chairs. Last week, the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) also announced the recall of Fisher-Prices’ 3-1 high chairs after reports of the seat falling backwards from its frame. Fisher-Price is offering a free repair kit to parents. The obvious alternative would be getting a new high chair or at least a used, non-recalled high chair instead. The chair was sold exclusively at Target Stores from December 2008 to March 2009. Please stop using the high chairs and visit the Fisher-Price website for more information on the recall. Notice has gone out today that Infantino has recalled three of its infant toys – the Lil Chef Set (seen above), the Activity Stacker and Tag Along Chime Trio. They are sold at Target, Babies R’ Us, Wal-Mart and other specialty stores. There have been reports of the metallic fabric detatching from the toys, posing a choking hazard. Fortunately, no injures have been reported. Visit the CPSC website for more information. |
